New Releases: Period Films Opening This Week (May 10)

  • Charlie Says (1960s-1970s)
Manson Family “biopic” with Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Charles Manson and Hannah Murray (“Gilly” on Game of Thrones) as Lesilie Van Vouten
  • Tolkien (early 20th Century – WWI-era)
J.R.R. Tolkien (Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit) biopic (from which the Tolkien estate has distanced itself) depicting his war experience, family life, and writing career.
  • Shadow (ancient China’s Three Kingdoms Period, circa 220 AD)
A fantastical “wuxia epic” – this film artfully depicts martial arts combat set amidst palace intrigue
  • The Professor and the Madman (mid 19th century UK)
The story of the Oxford English Dictionary, starring Mel Gibson and Sean Penn as Professor James Murray and Dr. W.C. Minor, respectively. Dr. Minor, however, makes his contribution from Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum.
  • Wild Nights with Emily (19th century USA)
A revisionist biopic of Emily Dickinson that reappraises the famously reclusive poet, depicting a rich, same-sex, romantic life.
